IP65 vs IP67: Choosing Waterproof LED Drivers
IP65 handles rain and dust; IP67 survives driven rain and temporary immersion. Where each rating belongs, what potting does, and how warranties back it.

IP65 means the enclosure is dust-tight and survives water jets from any direction — correct for canopy-mounted and sheltered outdoor positions. IP67 adds survival of temporary immersion, meaning driven rain, coastal spray and ground-level splash — correct for exposed facades, floodlights and coastal sites. Both ratings are achieved the same way in production: silicone potting of the electronics inside an all-aluminium housing with sealed cable glands, verified by hipot testing and sealed-housing aging.
Key points
- IP65 = dust-tight + water jets; IP67 = + temporary immersion
- Exposed facades, coastal and ground-level positions → IP67
- Under canopies and in signage → IP65 is enough and costs less
- The rating is only as good as the potting — voids are the real failure path
What the digits actually mean
The code comes from IEC 60529. First digit: solids. Second digit: liquids.
| Rating | Solids | Liquids | Practical meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| IP65 | 6 — dust-tight | 5 — jets from any direction | Rain and washdown OK, no immersion |
| IP67 | 6 — dust-tight | 7 — temporary immersion ≤ 1 m | Driven rain, coastal spray, splash, flooding |
Where each rating belongs
IP67 (Towe TH, TD, TY series) — anything the sky can touch directly:
- Building facades and bridges
- Ground-level floodlights and uplights
- Landscape and garden lighting in humid climates
- Outdoor light boxes and channel letters
- Coastal installations of any kind
IP65 (Towe FY finned series) — outdoors but sheltered:
- Under canopies and eaves
- Inside ventilated sign cabinets
- Mounted positions with a rain shadow
How a driver earns the rating
The rating is not a gasket — it is a process. Towe waterproof families are built this way:
- All-aluminium housing with integrated cable glands; the housing is the heat sink.
- Silicone potting of the electronics, dosed so no air void remains. Voids become condensation pockets that pump moisture into the unit with every thermal cycle.
- Hipot test on every assembled unit to verify isolation before sealing is trusted.
- Sealed-housing aging — waterproof units run 100% full-load burn-in fully assembled, not on open benches.
- Wide 110–265 V AC input, because outdoor grids swing hardest exactly when it rains.
That process is what backs the 3–5 year warranties on the potted families, with a field failure rate held at or below 0.03%.
The specification shortcut
Write the position, not just the number: “ground-level facade uplight, coastal, 150 W” → IP67, TY SiC series. “under-canopy sign cabinet, 400 W” → IP65, FY series. If a project mixes both, the TD series covers 24–2000 W with constant voltage and constant current dual control in one IP67 format.
For pond, fountain or in-ground submerged fixtures: we do not build IP68, and we will say so rather than sell you an IP67 unit and hope.
